People all across North America can expect to see aurora borealis light up the night sky this evening to kick off the weekend.
Forecasters with NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Centre (SWPC) issued a “severe” geomagnetic storm watch. This particular storm is classified as a “G4” on a scale used to measure the intensity of geomagnetic storms caused by the sun’s radioactive bursts, ranging from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). Experts say this is the first G4-level watch issued since January 2005.
The SWPC predicts the storm to peak late Friday night into very early Saturday morning, with the strongest aurora potential being from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM Central Standard Time. With little cloud coverage expected across the western half of the country, Canadians may just be able to catch a spectacular light show in the night sky.
